Ruth’s directorial debut, For You Were Once Strangers, was awarded Best Documentary Feature at the 2015 Chelsea Film Festival in New York. For You Were Once Strangers tells the story of a rift within Israeli society as it tries to come to terms with a deportation order targeting 700 South Sudanese refugees. 

Since honing her filmmaking skills in DCTV’s Workshops, Ruth’s work has been broadcast by major international platforms such as Time Magazine, The Economist, Russia Today, Japan’s Nikkei Business and Israel’s Channel 10.

 

 

 

 

Un jour terre d’accueil, Israël expulse ses réfugiés

Ruth Berdah-Canet a remporté le mois dernier le prix du documentaire du Chelsea Film Festival de New York pour son film For You Were Once Strangers. Alors que l’Europe peine à apporter une réponse claire et coordonnée à l’afflux massif de réfugiés venus de pays africains et du moyen-orient en guerre, la réalisatrice s’est intéressée à un autre pays, Israël, et à sa politique d’expulsion passée inaperçue à l’extérieur de ses frontières.​

Confronté à sa première grande vague d’immigration illégale le jeune pays, dont la population a elle-même souffert de l’exil, a choisi de renvoyer dans leur pays ravagé par un génocide quelques 700 demandeurs d’asile sud-soudanais, des familles intégrées pour la majorité. A travers ce documentaire la jeune réalisatrice française suit le quotidien de ces hommes, femmes et enfants qui ont 60 jours pour quitter un pays qu’ils considéraient comme leur mère d’accueil. Analyse.
